Ruth Rappaport
GUITAR PIANO & SONG
Ruth Rappaport plays traditional American, Irish, and British Isles music. An excellent rhythm guitarist and pianist, she lays down the beat behind some of the best fiddlers, old-time string bands, and other traditional instrumentalists active today. Ruth shines as a vocalist with a repertoire that ranges from mountain ballads and gutsy blues to honky-tonk hits, old folk songs, and children's favorites.
Raised in New York City by folk and country music enthusiasts, Ruth moved to upstate New York for college in the 1970s. Living in the Albany area, she began playing in coffeehouses and for contra dances. She worked for Bill and Andy Spence at Andy's Front Hall and recorded with Michael, McCreesh, and Campbell and John McCutcheon, among other artists. Since 1979 she has made Boston her home and has been involved in the old-time and Irish music scenes. For 15 years she traveled widely with the acclaimed eclectic string band, The Poodles. She currently performs with her husband and son, Joe Pete and Ben Wetherbee; leads sing-a-longs with children and adults; and plays old-time, Irish, and other traditional music with many talented colleagues. |
